Tooth whitening

Belasis Dental Practice Billingham Cleveland

So you are thinking about whitening your teeth? There are two ways in which we can whiten your teeth for you and give you a smile to be proud of and show off to everyone!!

The first form of tooth whitening is ‘take home whitening.’ This involves us taking an impression of your teeth, which we send away to a lab to make whitening trays that will fit perfectly over your teeth. We will then give you a whitening solution that you place in the trays and wear over night, normally for around two weeks or until you achieve a colour you are happy with. You keep the trays, so when your teeth do eventually fade back slightly you can top your colour up by popping the trays in over night and they will return to a whiter shade again. This is ideal if you are going to a wedding or for a special occasion.

The second form of tooth whitening is known as ‘chairside whitening.’ This involves us protecting your gums and painting a stronger bleach solution on to your teeth for several minutes and washing off, this is repeated up to four times until you are happy with the shade. We can still make you some trays to take home with you to continue topping up the shade over night. As a stronger whitening solution is used sensitivity can be a problem so we do not recommend chairside whitening if you have any sensitivity, however there are desensitizing solutions we can apply before the procedure. We use Zoom! whitening in our practice, which is the number 1 patient requested professional whitening brand by Philips.

Will all my teeth whiten?? No, only your natural teeth will whiten. Any teeth that are crowned, veneered, bridged will not whiten. If a tooth is filled only the natural part of the tooth will whiten. Some patients are happy with this as their natural teeth have darkened over the years and whitening them will make them match crowns they had done several years ago. Of course you may want to replace older crowns, veneers or fillings so this is something to bare in mind.

Will I suffer any sensitivity?? Sensitivity is a possible side effect of whitening. Not everybody suffers from sensitivity but if you are one of the unfortunate ones who does, don’t worry, we will give you some sensitive tooth paste, in your home whitening kit, that you can either rub on to the tooth or teeth that are sensitive or put some of it into your whitening trays and wear them for half an hour before proceeding with the whitening solution.

How long will my teeth stay white for??  Gradually over time your teeth will fade back slightly, but that is why you keep the whitening trays so you can top up your colour for special occasions or whenever you feel necessary. Of course many things can stain the teeth such as tea, coffee, red wine and curry and this is something to be aware of as this can cause fade back quicker.
